Once a Sinfonian, Always a Sinfonian

We're a group of alumni Sinfonians - brothers of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity in the Alabama counties of Calhoun, Etowah, Cherokee, Cleburne, Randolph, Clay & Talladega.- coming together for music, fellowship and fraternity. Live nearby? Join us!

December 2012 meeting

Our next meeting will be Sunday afternoon, Dec. 2, at 3 p.m. We'll meet at the home of Bro. Ben Cunningham, 812 12th Ave. NE in Jacksonville. Please plan to join us. Besides enjoying the pleasure of eachothers' company, we'll have plenty to talk about, including all of the following:

Southerners reunion success:

At the annual reunion Nov. 9-10 of the Gray Echelon, the alumni of Jacksonville State's Southerners and Marching Ballerinas, we greeted and collected contact info from 26 alumni Sinfonians of JSU's Epsilon Nu Chapter. While just one of these brothers was on the chapter's list of unmailable alums, for whom the fraternity has no contact info, many of the others gave us new addresses. That means we helped them avoid eventually becoming "lost." The importance  to the fraternity of this simple work can't be overstated. Big thanks are due to Dr. Legare McIntosh, Donnie Monroe, John Phillips, Brandon Rucker, Mark Wallace and Matt Weaver, who all helped out either at the reunion dinner Friday night or before the rehearsal Saturday morning. (Apologies if we've forgotten anyone.)

Province Workshop Jan. 18-20:

The next Province 34 Workshop, set for Jan 18-20 in Tuscaloosa, is shaping up to be a big one. National President John Mongiovi, Vice President Mark Lichtenberg and Province 14 Gov. Brian Stratton all will attend, as will chapters from Province 24, next door in Mississippi. We also hope to have many alumni there. That's you. Mark your calendars now so you can join us there.

New alumni programs:

25-year Membership Award pin
In case you haven't already heard, the fraternity has launched two new programs to recognize its alumni: New Membership Award pins may distributed to brothers to mark their 10th, 25th and 50th anniversaries as Sinfonians. Any brother who has been a member of the fraternity for at least 10 years is eligible for one of these awards. Meanwhile, the farternity has also launched a program to recognize Sinfonians who have served in the military. The Challenge Coin program is made possible by the family of Christopher A. Patterson, Kappa Sigma (Valparaiso) 2010, who was killed in action with the Army early this year in Afghanistan. Both of these programs include new ceremonies for distribution of the award pins and coins to alumni Sinfonians, so plan to RSVP to a province, chapter or NEAL Sinfonia event soon so your brothers can honor you.

Annual Meeting: June 2

The annual meeting of the Northeast Alabama Alumni Association of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia will be June 2, at noon in the fellowship hall of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, 230 Seventh St. NE, Jacksonville, AL. A light barbecue lunch will be served.

This meeting will include the election of officers for the 2012-13 operating year of the alumni association. This is also a good time to join the alumni association if you have not formally associated with us before. (Dues are $35 annually. More info is available here: Join us)

Please make your plans now to attend. Whether you have been with us since the start, haven't come out in a while, or have never attended one of our events, you are welcome. We look forward to the fraternal pleasure of your company, and we need your help. We want to do great things for music and for Sinfonia in our community, and we can't do them without you.

If you have a songbook, please bring it with you. If you know other alumni Sinfonians in the area, bring them with you, too! Please visit this event's Facebook page and let us know you're coming. See you there!

Next meeting: May 5

The next meeting of the Northeast Alabama Alumni Association will be Saturday, May 5 at 5 p.m. at Mason Hall on the campus of Jacksonville State University. Our meeting will be held in conjunction with the Epsilon Nu Chapter's 62nd Chapter Day observance. The ceremony and our meeting will be followed by a cookout being hosted by Epsilon Nu.

Please attend to show your support for the Epsilon Nu Chapter! This is also an important opportunity for you to re-affirm your commitment to the fraternity by joining or renewing your membership in the Northeast Alabama Alumni Association. We need you! Annual dues are $35 and are payable at the meeting. That will secure your membership through the end of our next operating year, July 31, 2013. You also can make arrangements with treasurer Gary Lewis to pay dues.

On Saturday, June 2, NEAL Sinfonia will hold its annual meeting. We're still nailing down the time and location, but we're planning a lunchtime gathering in a meeting hall to give us plenty of space and time for fellowship and taking care of business. There also will be food!

At the annual meeting, we'll elect officers for the next operating year. We need good candidates for all offices, and we need lots of brothers voting to support them. I know that as you read this you are mentally ruling yourself out as a candidate for office, and perhaps even as a dues-paid, voting member of the association. Stop right there! Please be aware that the alumni association and the fraternity at large need you! If you don't step forward, who will?
Please do these four simple things:

1) Attend the EN Chapter Day ceremony and NEAL Sinfonia Alumni Association meeting on May 5.
2) Commit to membership in NEAL Sinfonia by paying $35 annual dues.
3) Attend the NEAL Sinfonia annual meeting on June 2.
4) Consider accepting nomination or appointment to an office in the association.

With your help, Sinfonia will accomplish great things in our community and in our lives in the next year. We can't do it without you!

April meeting turnout, officer nominations and more

There was a strong turnout at our April meeting, thanks to the presence of many Epsilon Nu Chapter alumni. We hope many of these brothers will become members of NEAL Sinfonia!

Time is drawing near for NEAL Sinfonia's annual meeting, and the first election of officers under our new bylaws. Dr. Legare McIntosh, Brandon Rucker and Matt Wilson have been appointed to a nominating committee, and will suggest a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer by May 12. Nominations also will be accepted from the floor at the annual meeting.

That meeting will be Saturday, June 2, time and location to be determined (Watch this site and our Facebook group for news). If you'd like to be considered for an office, or if want to vote at the annual meeting, please be sure you have paid your $35 annual dues. You can do this at the May meeting, or by contacting treasurer Gary Lewis (gary.lewis -@- nealsinfonia.org).

April gathering

Northeast Alabama Sinfonia's next gathering will be Friday, April 6 at 7 p.m., at Cooter Brown's Rib Shack (8464 AL Highway 204, Jacksonville, AL 36365). Cooter Brown's has proved to be a popular choice with our members, so why mess with a good thing?

If you've not been to a gathering before, this is a great time to come out and join us. Click here to visit the Facebook event page and RSVP. Meanwhile, if you're a Facebook user and you haven't joined our group there, click here to visit the group page and sign up.

You may also be interested to know that alumni of the Epsilon Nu chapter are gathering after our meeting, at JSU's Mason Hall, at 9 p.m. If you're an alumnus of this chapter, please plan to attend! (Facebook event page for this is here.)

See you Friday night!

February gathering

We had a nice turnout for our February 2012 gathering, with seven local alumni Sinfonians fraternizing over food & beverages at Cooter Brown's Rib Shack. We (finally) approved a set of bylaws, and are looking forward to a strong 2012! Join us next month for the March gathering, again at Cooter Brown's in Jacksonville.
